BAFT Representative in Asia Pacific

Part Time Consultant Opportunity

Consultant will serve as BAFT’s official representative in Asia Pacific. The consultant will have high industry visibility, and is an essential contributor to the success of the BAFT in the Asia Pacific region.

The consultant will coordinate policy efforts on behalf of BAFT’s members in Asia, guided by the BAFT Asia Council’s co-chairs, and related committees and working groups established to deliver BAFT member needs. This position will directly engage in policy advocacy in Asia Pacific and build industry coalitions with local organizations. This requires both written and in-person advocacy and relationship building. The incumbent will expand BAFT’s visibility with both current and prospective members in the region.

This role will require the individual to possess or develop subject matter expertise that will facilitate policy dialogue with regards to issues that affect transaction banking including: trade finance, cross-border payments, liquidity, AML/KYC, and emerging technology. Ability to analyse and interpret legislative and regulatory materials internationally is required. The ability to consolidate views from different institutions, reconcile differentiated opinions, and represent positions in both writing and orally is critical to success.

Periodic travel to Hong Kong and Singapore is expected to fulfill these duties, with travel to other locations possible. To fulfill the required duties, the consultant will work approximately 15 to 20 hours per week.

Minimum 5 to 7 years of relevant work experience in international policy development or banking, preferably related to international finance, payments and trade is desired. Exceptional writing, editing, speaking and presentation skills and the capability to perform in a global environment with sensitivity to local customs and practices is required. Multi-lingual capabilities (English/Mandarin) is preferred.

Duties of Consultant

  • Asia Policy Monitoring and Advancement
    • Monitor policy developments taking place in Asia on policy areas impacting transaction banking. Issues to include, but not limited to, innovation, trade-based poly laundering, and Basel implementation. Consultant will keep BAFT staff up to date on major policy developments through regular policy updates.
    • Forge relationships with relevant policy makers in Singapore, Hong Kong, China and other relevant jurisdictions to present BAFT priorities. Conduct a minimum of (5) meetings with policy makers per quarter.
    • Identify opportunities for BAFT to engage in the policymaking process through the development of comment letters and/or in-person meetings with regulators.
    • Develop and leverage relationships with other trade associations in the region to build consensus and advance member priorities.
    • Represent BAFT at government and industry events, as needed.
  • Asia Member Support and Recruitment
    • Support development and execution of Asia membership campaign – working with Asia Council and BAFT Membership Director.
    • Assist with member prospecting and recruitment.
    • Support development and execution of Asia-based webinars (4+ times a year) ensuring that subjects meet the needs of the local members.
    • Support development and execution of other Asia-related initiatives working with BAFT staff.
  • Meetings Management
    • Support the development of the agenda, substance, action and output for the (4) quarterly meetings of the BAFT Asia Council, and related committee work streams.
    • Liaise with external speakers regarding contributions and outputs.
    • Collaborate with BAFT DC office for input and coordination of meetings. Ensure key messages from BAFT global Board of Directors meetings and other BAFT Regional Council meetings are communicated and considered in respect of the BAFT Asia Council initiatives and priorities.
    • Ensure proper minutes and deliverables for each meeting are documented and distributed to all Council members and BAFT staff in a timely manner.
    • Follow up after each meeting to identify and progress key actions in collaboration with Co-chairs – taking responsibility for ensuring activities are completed with appropriate urgency.
    • Work with Council/Committee chairs to ensure initiatives progress towards full execution, engaging BAFT staff, BAFT members and outside parties as appropriate.
  • Conferences & Events
    • Work with BAFT staff to support preparation and execution of events in Asia (workshops, conferences, symposia).
    • Assist in identifying and reaching out to potential local sponsors.
    • Liaise with local contacts within the region to solidify logistics and speaker support for programs.
