Growing Leaders in Global Banking
The financial services industry is in constant flux. Bankers must keep up with innovations in technology, regulatory reform, and new business models amidst an increasingly global economy.
The UW Global Bankers Program (UW-GBP) equips leaders to thrive through decision-making skills, leadership development, and hands-on problem-solving of industry challenges. To address and adapt to the changing business environment, the 2022 program will be offered in a hybrid mode that includes both live online and in-person components.
During the two weeks of Modules 1 and 2, you will:.
- Enhance leadership and decision-making skills for a changing global economy
- Develop a network of business contacts and become part of an extensive GBP alumni community worldwide.
- Gain a new understanding of industry-changing forces such as risk, globalization, and technology.
- Improve decision-making skills with tools for assessing the competition, creating business strategies, analyzing opportunities, and responding to changing markets.
- Gain a deeper understanding of cultural differences as you learn alongside participants from the United States, Europe, Central Asia, North and South America, and Pacific Rim countries.
During Module 3, you will continue to work remotely with your team on your capstone project introduced during Module 1 and 2. The final team presentations and graduation will take place remotely be on September 29, 2022 in front of the UW-GBP Board.
Equipped with new skills and new contacts, some UW-GBP graduates go on to lead some of the world’s most influential banks. Register for UW-GBP and make sure you and your colleagues are prepared to deal with the current and future changes in the financial industry.
Curriculum Relevant to the Banking Industry Today
Our curriculum provides an integrated view of global banking principles and practices. Courses will equip participants with tools to better understand the financial services industry, international markets, risk management, strategy, and leadership. Faculty will bring their teachings to life by applying the topics to current issues in a comprehensive program that is timely, relevant, and with lasting impact. Core classes include:
- Elevate Your Power of Influence: Gain a better understanding of your personal communication style and the styles of others. Learn to adapt your approach to maximize effective communication with your customers and stakeholders to elevate your power of influence, especially in a global cross-cultural environment.
- Negotiation Skills: Become a more effective communicator and decision-maker through techniques for building and maintaining relationships, learning to apply appropriate influence, structuring agreements, and developing buy-in.
- Making Critical Decisions: This session explores the systems people use for processing information and making decisions. We will draw on cognitive psychology and behavioral economics to examine common biases that get in the way of effective decision-making. We will look at the common decision errors leaders make and how to avoid them. We will also investigate the natural problems that arise when people make decisions in groups. We will address three crucial ingredients for good group decision making and examine how to aggregate individual opinions into high quality decisions.
- Growth Mindset: The focus of this session is on understanding the value of a growth mindset and learning how to cultivate it in ourselves and in our organizations. By harnessing the power of the growth mindset, we can transform both individual performance and large-scale organizational culture.
- Effective Leadership: Focus the critical leadership attributes, qualities, skills, and competencies needed to create and sustain organizational success. This course will explore the dynamic leadership issues facing today's financial institutions.
- Fostering and Managing Diverse Teams: Research suggests that all employees thrive when their leaders emphasize multiculturalism and create inclusive workplace cultures. To facilitate a positive culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion, organizational leaders and supervisors can systematically utilize decision-making tactics that will help build a culture that leads to overall success.
- Sustainable Finance: Financial risks associated with climate change are causing unexpected losses in the banking system. From infrastructure finance to household mortgages, there are enormous credit implications associated with a world of more extreme weather and rapid technological change. This session will explore what leading banks and financial institutions are doing now to navigate a new economic landscape being shaped by concerned customers, shareholders, and regulators.
- Industry Practices, Products, and Prospects: Learn from executives in the banking and financial industry on topics such as industry ethics, cybersecurity, and global economic change.

- Remote academic intensive (live online class sessions)

Participation Criteria
Please review the following criteria and discuss with your sponsor. Consider how much you will benefit from the program as well as how much you can contribute.
- Type and number of years of experience: Participants should have experience that has prepared them to derive full benefit from the curriculum. At the same time, they must bring with them experience that enables them to contribute to the learning of the other participants.
- English language ability: Although TOEFL scores are not required, English language proficiency is expected. All classes and written materials will be presented in English. Participants are expected to participate actively in classroom discussions and study group sessions, as well as give presentations in English.

The in-person portion of the program will be held on the campus of the University of Washington (UW), ranked #7 in the world by US News and World Report, the state’s largest university having more than 54,000 students.
