All our institutions employ network managers responsible for the selection and management of Nostro providers. There is a commonality between all of them: they have received a sensitive mandate, be it explicit or implicit, asking them to protect the ability of their institution to issue and receive cross border payments, for itself or on behalf of its customers. You will discover in a few minutes that even before the pandemic and the tenser geopolitical environment, this role had been played in many ways. You will also see whether our new era of permacrisis has changed the behaviors and policies of our institutions from a network management perspective.

This session covers the role of trade finance in achieving sustainable trade. It looks at the key issues and risks that banks face when introducing ESG strategies, from regulation through to understanding ESG exposure across complex supply chains. It will look at how sustainability considerations have changed during the Russia-Ukraine crisis moving from the “sustainably produced, sustainably transported and used for sustainable purposes” to a more nuanced definition of sustainability that may include security and defence as well. To this end, the ESG policies of nations is increasingly focused on supply chain resilience and minimising exposure to strategic, competitive or military threats in a world where export controls and sanctions are defining the way in which we trade. The role of banks is critical in complying with a rapidly shifting, if not decoupling, global landscape. The session will discuss the consequences for day-to-day trade finance practitioners.

Digital transformation of transaction banking has become a global priority, but challenges remain, especially confronting international trade. There is a pressing need for common standards to facilitate interoperability of digital systems and for law reform to remove outdated laws that require critical trade documents to be in paper form. We take a look at how institutions are dealing with the significant increase in using sanctions and embargoes as an economic instrument to react to countries’ (of course, also specially designated nationals) actions that go against international law and basic values. The expectations and role of banks (essentially policing and implementing sanctions programs) in the current sanctions environment, experiences and impact in our respective institutions. We will discuss the multiple challenges faced in our institutions and the experienced effectiveness of the sanctions (i.e., aspects of avoidance, circumvention). The panel will discuss the heavy burden on the banks in terms of costs and open to the panelists to suggest ways forward.
