What strategies can be implemented to ease credit requirements and reduce trade finance obstacles for SMEs and MSMEs globally? Adapting to a Volatile World: Transaction Banking in Times of Frequent Crises

This session will examine two key trends in transaction banking and the implication on banks’ strategies and their roles in enabling agility within companies to achieve supply chain and overall resilience. First, the increasing frequency of major crises, demanding a greater agility from banks to better anticipate and react to these events; and second, the heightened priority on securing access to affordable financing for clients, driven primarily by a high-interest rate, high inflation environment, overlaying net-zero and digital transformation in strategic conversations. The session will include proprietary data and insights from Coalition Greenwich’s Voice of the Client Global Large Corporate Trade Finance, Global Large Corporate Cash Management, Global ESG, and Digital Transformation Benchmarking studies. Findings are based on our Voice of the Client data, comprising interviews with more than 2,500 large corporates globally of which 1,100 are with European large corporates, as well as conversations with more than 40 banks.

Correspondent Banking: How to Protect a Critical Function?

The banking industry has been facing more instability in the recent past. A globally tenser geopolitical environment, where accessing certain geographies became more challenging from a compliance and reputational risks perspective. The new interest rates context also revealed some weaknesses in the banking industry, in terms of business models, ALM and to a certain extent, supervision. This more dangerous or challenging background revealed the importance of protecting our institutions’ capacity to issue and receive payments, be they our own payments or payments on behalf of our customers. As a matter of fact, a sound bank could easily become at risk if prevented from reaching a market because of badly anticipated restrictions on compliance or on intraday liquidity provision. Resiliency has become a key concern in the industry. It often means ability to anticipate, our network management having most of the time a central role to play in that respect, depending on our institutions’ organization and governance.

Paul Donovan
Paul Donovan
Chief Economist
UBS Global Wealth Management

I am the Chief Economist of UBS Global Wealth Management. I believe passionately that economics is something everyone can and should understand. We all make economic decisions all of the time. The problem is that economists tend to wrap economics in jargon and equations. We do not need to do that. It is my job to help people realise what they probably already know – by developing and explaining the UBS economic view in a clear way. To do this, I publish research (most of which you can find here), make short videos, and appear in various print and broadcast media. I tend to think of myself as a political economist, not a mathematical economist. I get very excited about lots of things in economics. Diversity, inflation, education, trade, inequality, sustainability and social change are some of the topics I am very enthusiastic about (to the point of writing books about them).
