Unintended Consequences: The Fate and Folly of the Reduction of RMA Relationships
While SWIFT’s original mission, dating back to the 1970s, was to provide a common language for international financial messaging, much has changed since then, causing us to re-examine the whole concept of correspondent banking. Many significant global events have occurred over the past 20 years, creating intense regulation and compliance requirements. Fast forward to today, where large volumes of RMAs have become too expensive and cumbersome for many global banks to maintain, with the impacts being felt across the board for importers, exporters, US regionals, and global banks. Collectively, we’re tasked with finding a more efficient solution to sustaining the necessary SWIFT correspondent relationships needed to support and grow cross-border trade with the hope of increasing the US share of the global marketplace. We will explore some creative ideas and solutions to address how the market needs a different approach.
