Social Activity: The World When BAFT was Founded: A Conversation with Historian, Jim Grant What was the world like when BAFT was founded 100 years ago? What were on the mind of financiers and policy makers in 2021 that lead to the creation of an association focused on trade. World War I was still on everyone’s mind, the colonial blocks of trade were slowly collapsing, the USA was a new kid on the block, the worst pandemic ever, the Spanish flue, was finally over and, to crown it all, the 1920s stated off with a short, but brutal recession.
Join a conversation with historian and writer, James Grant. James Grant is the founder of Grant’s Interest Rate Observer, a leading journal on financial markets, which he has published since 1983. He is the author of seven books covering both financial history and biography. Grant’s journalism has been featured in Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Foreign Affairs. He has appeared on 60 Minutes, Jim Lehrer’s News Hour, and CBS Evening News.

    Global Market VIew
While the COVID-19 pandemic took a toll on global growth in 2020, the quick action taken by central banks and governments has helped economic recovery. Global GDP is expected to grow by around 4% in 2021, with Asia leading the way. Now that the dust has settled on the US election and Brexit, will global recovery prospects be supported by the various bi/multi-lateral trade agreements? How critical is vaccine roll-out to economic recovery? Can the global economy continue to recover without further fiscal and monetary stimulus? What role will global trade flows play in accelerating global growth? How long will it take for supply chains to return to pre-Covid levels? Our panelists will discuss and debate these topics to inform our view of 2021 and beyond.

Spotlight Series: Women Leaders at the Banking Helm in MENA
Although the pandemic has cast a dark shadow on our daily lives, our economies and our mental health, it has also cast a shining light on the few women leaders, who rose to the occasion and navigated the pandemic well enough to guide their countries to safer shores. The same applies to the few women leaders in the financial services industry who not only rightfully earned their positions at the helm but also excelled in their normal daily business activities and in ensuring the resilience of their institutions in the face of different challenges. Our chat will be with two renowned female executives who climbed their way to the top of the banking industry in MENA. They will share their experiences, their challenges in (What is generally perceived as) a male-dominated region, their post-pandemic outlook for the industry/the market and finally the “North Star” that they continue to follow throughout their entire banking journey.

Looking at Trade – Rebuilding, Rethinking and Reshaping
Global Trade has been affected not only by the Covid-19 pandemic but also by a wide range of other factors, including the emergence of supply chain disruptions, complex geopolitical relations and even protectionism vs. international integration. How do all these pieces fit together, if they do at all? And what can we expect to see in the future. Grappling with these provocative topics the panelists intend to look further down the road and to draw conclusions on the further evolvement of global trade. How can global interactions (UN, WTO, WHO, International Court of Justice) possibly help?

North America Regional Track: Champions for Equality: How to be an Agent of Change
Women and allies have been calling for gender equality for a long time and while progress has been made, a collective effort is still required to dismantle barriers. Around the globe, there is growing attention to systemic racism and sexism and a global movement toward workplace equality. Change starts with individuals taking responsibility for their own attitudes and behaviors and leadership to drive systemic improvements to workplace policies, practices, and culture. Time is of the essence, customers, employees, and investors increasingly see equity and inclusion as not just a nice-to-have but a must-have.

Social Activity: Art in the Roaring ‘20: A Conversation with Axel Ruger, Head of The Royal Academy of Art in London
Take a step back into the world of art when BAFT was founded with the head of the Royal Academy of Art, Axel Ruger. We’ve asked Axel to choose three pieces of art from the ’20 that personifies what was going on in the mind of people and in particular artist at that time. How had war, pandemics, the collapse of an old order affected art and the artist of that time.
Axel Rüger was appointed as the new head of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2019. The Royal Academy of Arts exists now for more than 250 year and recently unveiling a £56m redevelopment. Before that Axel had been in charge of Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum for more than a decade. And before the Van Gogh Museum appointment, Axel was curator of Dutch paintings at the National Gallery in London. Axel was born in Dortmund and studied art history in Berlin, Cambridge and Ontario. Known for being personable and down to earth, he makes regular appearances on TV and radio and is highly regarded in the art world. While at the National Gallery his exhibitions included the highly acclaimed Vermeer and the Delft School in 2001 and Masterpieces of Seventeenth Century Dutch Portrait Painting in 2007. At the Van Gogh Museum, Axel oversaw major renovations and a full redisplay of the collection. During his tenure, visitor numbers grew from 1.4 million to about 2.2 million a year.

MENA Regional Track: The DNA of Our Digital Identity
The pandemic has triggered a much needed stimulus to the digitization agenda of the banking sector. Banks have been forced to embrace technology at a much faster pace to not just deliver its services to consumers but also support the cultural shift in working practices of its employees. At the same time, financial authorities such as FATF have been encouraging the creation of digital identity to create efficiency in CDD and also boost financial inclusion of the underserved population. In this session, we take a look at the digitization drives of banks in areas like branches, payments, mobile banking, hybrid working, the associated risks and also hear from FATF on their vision for Banks on digital identity.

    Sustainable Trade Finance
Environmental, Society and Governance standards are increasingly in focus for investors, the public and regulators alike. Most banks have ESG staff functions, issuing green bonds and promoting sustainable investing. From a trade and supply chain perspective we offer a lot of tools to further support the ESG agenda. Within trade and supply chain finance we can nudge our customers to opt for sustainable sourcing, low-emission transport and providing ESG-friendly products.

External Factors Impacting the Transaction Banking Business: Practical Insights into RWA Management, Benchmark Rate reform and Basel IV
An evolving regulatory environment, changes in accounting rules and benchmark rate standards have all contributed to the seismic shift in Banks’ & Financial Institution’s strategy over the last few years. This compounded by a challenged business environment due to Covid has had a propounding impact on the way Banks view and operate their transaction banking businesses. These various factors have not had a homogenous impact globally; local interpretation and implementation timetables, have created a lack of consistency in application.
This session will help us understand the major impacts, how banks can work within this new context while ensuring overall returns and reinforce the importance of, as industry advocates, we need to have one voice.
