John Ahearn
Global Head of Trade

Mr. John Ahearn, a Managing Director in Citi’s Transaction Services (CTS) business, is currently responsible for global supply chain and trade finance, including export and agency financing, as well as asset optimization. Prior to joining Citi, Mr. Ahearn was with ABN Amro for eight years and was responsible for Financial Institutions and Head of Sales globally for the trade business. He also had senior roles at Bank of New York and started his banking career at JP Morgan as a Management Trainee. Mr. Ahearn is also on the Board of Directors for BAFT and the Pacific Rim Bankers Association.

Stephen Alsace
Senior Director, Sanctions

Mr. G. Stephen Alsace, LLB, JD, is Senior Director, Sanctions at Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Toronto, and is responsible for global sanctions compliance for all the CIBC group of companies.  He articled and began practicing with Borden Ladner Gervais in 1997, then moved to the CIBC Legal Department from 2001-2013, where his responsibilities included AML and sanctions. In 2013, he was appointed to his current role in the CIBC AML Group. He has delivered presentations and papers on a number of different topics for the Canadian Bar Association, Federated Press and Investment Funds Institute of Canada. He has helped to organize an ad hoc committee on sanctions under the auspices of the Canadian Banker’s Association.

BalaniHenry Balani
Head of Global Strategic Affairs

Mr. Henry Balani is currently Global Head of Strategic Affairs for Accuity, responsible for driving thought leadership in the financial services industry.  In his prior role as Head of Innovation, he helped pioneer new AML sanction screening solutions related to Trade Finance compliance.  He was previously Managing Director with responsibility for managing Accuity’s Compliance Group that includes Product Management and Professional Services related to all Compliance Risk solutions. Accuity is a global provider of payments and compliance solutions with clients in the Financial Services and Corporate sectors, including banks, money services businesses, Insurance, Shipping and Manufacturing firms. 

BalaniDaniel Bendersky
Head of Pre-Sales, Americas

Mr. Daniel Bendersky has been obsessively focused on helping Financial Institutions rethink, streamline, and modernize their payments infrastructure since graduating with an MBA from MIT’s Sloan School of Management in 2009. His achievements include authoring the functional specifications of D+H’s solution for Swish, a 2014 Celent Model Bank Award-winning Real Time Payments service, and managing D+H GPS’s Payments Business Analysis practice in the Americas. In his current role as D+H Global Payment Solutions’ Head of Presales for the Americas, he oversees Sales support for D+H’s Transaction Banking, Treasury, and Financial Messaging portfolio.

Kimberly BurdetteKimberly Burdette

Ms. Kimberly Burdette is a Senior Vice President in Capital Markets for PNC Bank and the manager of its International Financial Institutions business.  She has responsibility for the relationship, credit and compliance management of international banks with which PNC engages.  PNC provides a wide range of trade, treasury management, balance sheet management and capital markets solutions and services to international financial institutions operating in the US and abroad.  Ms. Burdette has worked for PNC Bank and its predecessor, Pittsburgh National Bank, for 30 years. She is currently EVP of PNC’s edge act subsidiary, PNC Bank International.  She also serves as a director for BAFT.   

Patrick Burke
President and CEO
HSBC North America Holdings Inc.

Mr. Patrick Burke joined HSBC in 1989 and has held a number of leadership positions in Strategy and Retail Banking in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. Appointed to his current role in November, 2014, Mr. Burke is an Executive Director of HSBC’s principal subsidiaries in the United States, and is also a Group Managing Director of HSBC Holdings plc. Prior to his current role, Mr. Burke was President and CEO of HSBC Finance Corporation, where he is also Chairman of the Board. Mr. Burke serves on the boards of The Clearing House, and the Partnership for New York City; and he is a Member of the 30% Club in the United States.

Tod Burwell
President and CEO

Mr. Tod Burwell is the President and Chief Executive Officer of BAFT. Prior to being promoted to CEO, he served as the Senior Vice President of Trade Products with oversight of all trade-related initiatives including the Global Trade Industry Council, Trade Committees, and other strategic initiatives of the organization. Mr. Burwell has over 25 years of trade, supply chain and cash management experience as a banking practitioner, as well as serving as a consultant to global corporations and suppliers of strategically integrated trade solutions. Prior to joining BAFT, Mr. Burwell was a Managing Director at JPMorgan Chase and held senior global management roles responsible for trade operations, launching the logistics business and managing global product sales for trade finance and logistics management.

John CollinsJohn Collins
Vice President, International Policy

Mr. John Collins is Vice President of International Policy for BAFT, overseeing the development and execution of its global policy and advocacy efforts.  Prior to BAFT, Mr. Collins served as Head of Policy for Coinbase, a leading blockchain company, where he led the company's discussions and relationships with governments worldwide. Prior to Coinbase, he served as Senior Professional Staff Member for the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs for Chairman Tom Carper (D-DE). Mr. Collins was the Chairman's primary advisor on emerging issues related to digital currencies and blockchain technology, leading the first Congressional hearing on the subject in the fall of 2013.

Kyran Culhane

Mr. Kyran Culhane is Managing Partner of DCDB Group, a global bank and non-bank FI consulting firm. He serves as DCDB Group’s Head of Correspondent Banking advising banks from Europe, North and South America. He is responsible in assisting clients acquire, sustain and develop FI relationships to support global correspondence, trade finance and inter banking relations while staying at the forefront of the ever-developing regulatory and compliance environment. Mr. Culhane also acts as CIO of DC Ventures, a pre-seed venture capital firm focused on Online Media, E-Commerce and Fintech startups. He is also a Board Member of the Emerging Market Investors Association (EMIA).  Kyran is based between Washington DC, Dublin and Buenos Aires.

Patrick Davies
Deputy British Ambassador to the USA
British Embassy, Washington DC

Mr. Patrick Davies took up his post as Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Washington in September 2013. A career diplomat, Mr. Davies has worked in various environments around the world, often in times of crisis or transition. He has played a pivotal role in British policy-making around the Arab Spring, Iran and its nuclear programme and the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In recognition of his outstanding record of service, in 2012 Her Majesty The Queen awarded him the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Mr. Davies joined the Foreign Office in 1993, initially serving as a policy officer covering Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. His first overseas posting was to the British Embassy in Rabat, Morocco, where he provided the British government with analysis and reporting on that country’s political situation and its struggles against drug trafficking and violent Islamism.

Law Office of Ross S. Delston

Ross S. Delston is a Washington, DC-based attorney, Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) and former Counsel, U.S. Export-Import Bank with over 40 years of experience in the financial services sector. His expertise in trade-based money laundering (TBML) includes revising the trade finance procedures for the US operations of a major foreign bank; acting as an expert witness on TBML issues on behalf of the U.S. Attorney’s Office; and training officials on TBML at venues throughout the world. He is the co-author of two law review articles: “Strengthening Our Security: A New International Standard on TBML is Needed Now” (2012) and “Reaching Beyond Banks: How to Target TBML and Terrorist Financing Outside the Financial Sector” (2009).

Desai, PParth Desai
Founder and CEO

Mr. Parth Desai is Founder and Owner of Pelican. He graduated from IIT – Mumbai and Georgia Tech with a Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence and was quickly hired to work with one of the most celebrated global pioneers of Artificial Intelligence, Mr. Roger Schank. Mr. Desai rapidly built a deep expertise in AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP) that has driven his own ability to innovate over the past two decades. During that time, he built a global team and nurtured their collective AI expertise. Working collaboratively within the Banking, Financial Services and Insurance domain for Banks and Corporates, he has built a thorough understanding of the Payments, Securities, Compliance, Anti Money Laundering and Risk Management from both the business and technology viewpoints.

Adam B. Drucker

Mr. Adam Drucker entered on duty with the FBI in 1995. He was first assigned to the New York Field Office where he worked Financial Crimes cases. He was the Case Agent for two major undercover operations targeting mortgage fraud and credit card fraud. After the events of 9/11, he was selected to be the Financial Case Agent for the 9/11 investigative team. As such, he was responsible for tracing the sources and uses of the funds used in the attacks which led to the successful identification and subsequent capture of several Al-Qa’ida operatives and facilitators abroad. His work on that case was referenced throughout the 9/11 Commission report and culminated with his testimony before the 9/11 Commission.

Ms. Stacey Facter is a Senior Vice President, Trade Products where she has oversight of all trade-related advocacy, education and product-related initiatives for the association and its membership. She participates in BAFT trade committees and regional councils to advance the trade finance agenda of member institutions, including working toward standardizing trade definitions, documentation and regulations for industry adoption and consistent use. She has more than 25 years of experience in international banking, including over 20 years with JP Morgan Chase, covering emerging markets, international trade finance, cash and risk management, and securities collateral management.

Wells Fargo Securities

Ms. April Frazer is a Managing Director in Wells Fargo Securities’ Financial Institutions Investment Banking Group and leads the group’s Global Regulatory Capital practice. Ms. Frazer focuses on structuring and regulatory advisory assignments for clients in the financial services sector, with an emphasis on global depository institutions. She maintains regular dialogue with domestic and international regulatory bodies, as well as rating agencies, and is responsible for developing, marketing and executing innovative financing solutions for financial institutions globally. Before taking on her current role, Ms. Frazer held positions in High Grade Debt Capital Markets as part of the Client Solutions Group and Financial Institutions investment banking, where she covered the banking industry and was involved in various capital raising and advisory transactions.

Fraser, AMichael Gapen
Managing Director, Head of US Economics Research

Mr. Michael Gapen is a Managing Director and Chief US Economist for Barclays. Based in New York, Mr. Gapen leads a team that is responsible for the firm’s outlook for the US economy and monetary and fiscal policy.  Prior to taking on this role, Mr. Gapen was a Senior US Economist and Asset Allocation Strategist for Barclays, where in addition to the US outlook Mr. Gapen took on additional responsibility for forming the firm’s asset allocation views and marketing them to clients. Mr. Gapen joined Barclays in 2010 from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, where he was a Section Chief responsible for monetary and financial market analysis. In that capacity, he assisted the Board and the FOMC in the formulation of monetary policy and the Federal Reserve’s response to the financial crisis.

Mark Garfield

Mr. Mark Garfield’s current role is Head of Global Financial Institutions at Zions Bancorporation responsible for foreign bank relationship development.  He joined Zions Bancorporation in 2005.  He has over 30 years of banking experience with 25 years in international banking management covering trade finance, trade services, foreign exchange, correspondent banking and product development.  Throughout his career he has worked closely with corporate and commercial entities in the Midwest and Western U.S. providing banking support for cross-border trade.  Mr. Garfield currently serves as a Director of BAFT and Chair of the Utah District Export Council.  He served on the DEC National Advisory Board and Board of the World Trade Center, Utah.  He holds a B.S from the University of Colorado. 

Mark Giuffre

Mr. Mark Giuffre is the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in Chicago directing investigations of transnational crime groups and money laundering.  He has trained federal, state, local, foreign law enforcement, banking compliance professionals, businesses, the FBI Academy, and State Department. Mr. Giuffre has a Masters Degree from Michigan State University, is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS), Certified Protection Professional (CPP), recognized in U.S. District Courts as an Expert Witness on Money Laundering and Narcotics Trafficking. Mr. Giuffre has been a Special Agent for 30 years assigned to Illinois, Indiana, Washington D.C. and Thailand.

Rita Gonzalez

Ms. Rita Gonzalez, seasoned international banker with extensive experience in Transactional Banking and Financial Institutions businesses has a full skill set ranging from business origination and relationship management to development of new strategic and tactical initiatives, product development, risk, compliance and deal structuring. Ms. Gonzalez was the Head of Global & Strategic Accounts with First Data, 2015-16, following an extensive career at HSBC where she had a number of leadership roles including Head of Global Transactional Banking Institutional Sales, Americas; Head of Financial Institutions, Americas; Group’s product development of Trade Solutions. Prior to HSBC, she was a Team Leader covering Financial Institutions at Standard Charter Bank. Ms. Gonzalez holds a BS in Finance and MBA degree in Finance and International Business, both from Seton Hall University, and a Diploma on International Banking and Finance from New York University. Current Board Member and former Chair of the Board of BAFT.

Mr. Steve Ledford works with payments leaders on strategic issues facing financial institutions and leads initiatives to address them, including RTP, The Clearing House real-time payments program. Prior to joining The Clearing House, Mr. Ledford was a partner with Novantas, a financial services consulting firm. Before that he was a leader in McKinsey’s global payments practice, and was President of Global Concepts, a consulting and research firm specializing in payments and cash management. Mr. Ledford is a graduate of Wofford College with a BA in Economics.

Michel Martinez

Mr. Michel Martinez joined SGCIB in 2010 as Chief France Economist within the Global Economics Team and was appointed Chief Euro Economist in 2013. Before joining SGCIB, Mr. Martinez has held senior positions in economic research. He taught economics at the University of Cergy-Pontoise until 1998. From 1998 to 2006, Mr. Martinez worked for economic research institute Coe-Rexecode, a French think tank, as Deputy Director. Mr. Martinez was Deputy Director of Strategy and Research from 2007 to 2010, first at Société Générale Asset Management and then at Amundi. Mr. Martinez is a graduate from Ecole Polytechnique and holds a PhD in Economics (Paris School of Economics).

Todd McDonald

Mr. Todd McDonald is COO and Head of Partnerships for R3. Mr. McDonald co-founded R3 in 2013 and was one of the first to uncover the promise of distributed ledger technology for financial services. In his current role, Mr. McDonald focuses on building the partner application ecosystem for R3’s Corda platform. Mr. McQuillen also completed internships in Northern Trust’s FlexShares and Institutional OCIO groups. Rob Nichols

Mr. Rob Nichols is the president and CEO of the American Bankers Association, which represents banks of all sizes and charters and is the voice for the nation’s $16 trillion banking industry. Mr. Nichols joined ABA in August 2015, following ten years at the helm of the Financial Services Forum, a non-partisan financial and economic policy organization. Before joining the Forum, Mr. Nichols was assistant secretary of the Treasury for Public Affairs, a position requiring confirmation by the United States Senate. Mr. Nichols is also the recipient of the Alexander Hamilton Award, the highest honor of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. His career highlights include service as communications director for the Electronic Industries Alliance; as communications director to U.S. Senator Slade Gorton and Press Secretary to the late Congresswoman Jennifer Dunn, a former member of the House leadership; and in the West Wing as an aide in the Office of the Chief of Staff in the George H.W. Bush administration.

Mr. George Osborne is Innovation Director for Barclays’ Global Transaction Banking business, charged with ensuring that the best of Barclays’ innovation work is brought to bear for clients. He works closely with the innovation functions across Barclays’ businesses. He has been a mentor on the accelerator programme, and is leading on a number of areas in Barclays’ positioning for new sectors within FinTech. Amongst other things, Mr. Osborne has led on Barclays Corporate engagement with Distributed Ledger & Blockchain, and is a leading mind at Barclays on the construction of a scale identity business. Previously he managed banking relationships in the FinTech and Financial Intermediaries teams where his interest in Strategic Innovation and disruption was developed.

Susan Kaufman Purcell

Dr. Susan Kaufman Purcell is an independent consultant on Latin America based in Miami, Florida. She is the former director of the Center for Hemispheric Policy at the University of Miami and was Vice President of the Council of the Americas, a not-for-profit business organization of many Fortune 500 companies with investments in Latin America. She was also a Senior Fellow and Director of the Latin America Project at the Council on Foreign Relations and a member of the State Department’s Policy Planning Staff during the Carter and Reagan administrations. Dr. Purcell holds a PhD degree in political science from Columbia University and is a director of Valero Energy Corporation, a Fortune 100 company.

He also leads Wipro’s payments practice with currently over 4000 professionals deployed on payments engagements globally. RodriguezJohn Rodriguez

Mr. John Rodriguez is a Director of Financial Institutions, Global Transaction Banking for Barclays Corporate Banking for the Latin America and Caribbean region. He is based in Miami and leads a team that coordinates the banking requirements of Latin American institutions through the provision of trade finance, cash and liquidity management, FX, as well as localized support. He joined Barclays in 2012 to provide FIG coverage for the Latin Americas region. He has extensive experience in a range of institutional and corporate coverage roles, including trade financing, commercial lending, cash management sales, institutional and corporate trust sales. He has a wealth of experience in the financial institutions space, having joined Barclays from HSBC and Wells Fargo, where he spent 17 years combined in a range of roles including trade and global transaction banking. He is a formally credit trained banker, having completed the credit management training program at Bank of New York Mellon (Irving Trust) at the onset of his career.

Ms. Amy Sahm joined Fulton Financial’s International Group in 2002 following a long-term career in the Japanese banking and trade industry.  She works as department manager, overseeing product development, operations, sales and risk management. The International Group at Fulton is responsible for foreign exchange risk management and all international transactional products and services including Trade Finance for Fulton’s customer base.  The International Group primarily serves import / export SME clients within Fulton’s five state footprint. Ms. Sahm earned a B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh in Japanese Studies and has completed extensive courses in Trade Finance through the American Institute of Banking.

Ms. Isabel Schmidt is the Head of Institutional Cash Management Americas, and as so is responsible for all aspects of the ICM business booked in that region.  Her role also includes development and execution of ICM’s strategy on products, clients and markets, as well as the development of relationships with clients, managing the compliance and regulatory agenda and engagement with key stakeholders. Prior to her current position, Ms. Schmidt was global head of Market Management, responsible for managing Deutsche Bank’s payments clearing solutions for Financial Institutions with an emphasis on EUR, USD, multi-currency clearing as well as solutions for emerging world currencies such as Renminbi.

Mr. Jose Maria Seisdedos has been Relationship Manager of International Financial Institutions, Global Transaction Banking, at BBVA since 2011. Mr. Dan Soto is the Chief Compliance Officer for Ally, where he is responsible for Ally’s enterprise-wide compliance activities. Before joining Ally, he spent two years with Wachovia/Wells Fargo in anti-money laundering and retail banking compliance; was for three years the Chief Compliance Officer for Royal Bank of Canada–Centura; and spent eight years with Bank of America in the global anti-money laundering compliance function. Prior to joining the private industry, Mr. Soto was in the public sector as a commissioned bank examiner where he spent six years with the FDIC and nearly 10 years with the Federal Reserve Board. Mr. Soto is based in Charlotte, North Carolina; was awarded the 2014 Distinguished Service Award from the ABA Compliance Administrative Committee; is a faculty member of the American Bankers Association’s National Compliance School; on editorial advisory board for Banking Exchange; Chairman, Operations & Regulatory Compliance Committee (ORCC) for AFSA; and also on the advisory boards of the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists and the BSA Coalition.

Mr. Barry Tooker is an Offering Manager with IBM. He has been involved in operations and systems related projects for global banks and software firms as both a consultant and line manager for more than 40 years. Mr. Tooker has managed day to day operations for major money center and super regional banks. He has planned, organized, directed and managed major initiatives—including leading payment systems re-engineering efforts and other critical software installation projects for financial services organizations around the world. He is past member of the BAFT Board of Directors and past Chair of the Payments and Compensation Committee.

Vivanco, AAlvaro Vivanco
Head Latin American Strategist
BBVA CIB, New York

Mr. Alvaro Vivanco is the Head Latin American Strategist for BBVA, based in New York. His products focus on thematic macro issues across countries, as well as specific trade recommendations geared toward local and global institutional clients. Mr. Vivanco joined BBVA in 2011 after five years at UBS Investment Bank, where he was head Latam fixed-income and FX strategist. Previously, he worked at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. He holds a Master’s degree from Harvard University and a B.S. from Georgetown University, both in international economics.

Ms. Ruth Wandhöfer is highly regarded across the banking industry for her in-depth knowledge of the regulatory, market and competitive landscape.  She holds a number of influential positions, including the Chairmanship of the European banking industry’s Payments Regulatory Expert Group, membership of the Plenary of the European Payments Council (EPC), Chairmanship of the EPC’s Information Security Support Group, membership of the EU Commission’s Payment Systems Market Expert Group as well as COGEPS, the high level Euro Payments Strategy forum of the ECB to discuss payment policy issues with the market. In relation to BAFT-IFSA she is chairing the Eurozone WG or the Europe Council and looks forward to chair the forthcoming BAFT-IFSA global regulatory WG.

Mr. Chris Ward has served as executive vice president and head of product management for Treasury Management at PNC Bank since 2012. In this role, he manages, develops, and distributes PNC’s Treasury Management product line. He is responsible for revenue and profit growth, strategy development and execution, and building new products and services. In addition, he provides a critical role in client relationship management with high-value clients. Prior to joining PNC, Mr. Ward held several positions at Capital One, including head of product management innovation and integration for Treasury Management business. He developed and managed the objectives to support revenue growth, ensure customer retention and enhance customer satisfaction, and also provided leadership for commercial and Treasury Management integration activities.

Mr. David Wildner is the US Head of Anti-Money Laundering for BNY Mellon, responsible for all aspects of USD activity across the institution.  He is also the chairman of BNYM’s global Anti-Money Laundering Oversight Committee.  Previously, Mr. Wildner was the global head of AML Surveillance at BNY Mellon.  He has 10 years’ experience in the AML filed have also held roles at HSBC and Citi Private Bank.  Prior to working in the financial services area, Mr. Wildner spent 20 years in US Law enforcement conducting international money laundering and narcotics trafficking investigations.

In this role, she leads a team of treasury services sales professionals across the United States and Canada and comprised of four distinct sectors: banks and securities firms, alternative asset managers, insurance and specialty finance companies, and Canadian corporates.  Each team is accountable for the sale of global cash management products, trade finance, card solutions and balance and investment products, as well as maintaining and strengthening relationships with the firm’s most sophisticated financial services and Canadian clients. Prior to joining the firm in 2011, she spent 20 years at JPMorgan Chase & Co., most recently as sales executive of North American Financial Institutions and Federal Government Treasury Services Sales.

She has worked with the countries of the Caribbean and Central America for over 25 years, including 13 years in Haiti where she worked with USAID, the Caribbean Export Development Agency, and the U.S. Department of Commerce. She sits on the board of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association and the Caribbean Tourism Organization, is on the Advisory Board of the Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum, and is a member of the Bretton Woods Committee. In 2016 she received an “International Woman of the Year” Award from the World Trade Center Miami.
