Beyond Borders: How Innovation, DLT and Inter-operability are Re-wiring Cross-Border Payments

Cross-border payments are under intense pressure from regulators, corporates and consumers to become faster, cheaper and more transparent; yet legacy solutions, data frictions and siloed domestic schemes still create delays and cost. On the other hand, the industry is actively imagining and testing numerous initiatives, mobilizing central banks, commercial banks, and infrastructure providers to remain at the centre of the cross-border payments landscape. This sessions explores how cross border-payments are changing and what this means for banks, PSPs and real economy firms.

Where and When to Place your Bet - Regulation as a Catalyst for Financial Innovation

The digital assets sector is rapidly becoming institutionalized, propelled by global transactions, clearer regulations, and improved market infrastructure. By 2026, digital payments, stablecoins, central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), and tokenised assets are expected to converge, with regulatory frameworks such as the EU’s MiCA and the U.S. GENIUS Act accelerating responsible innovation. Financial institutions are increasingly adopting stablecoins, and projections indicate that by 2030, up to 10% of cross-border retail transactions could use them, representing trillions in value. Regulation now acts as a catalyst for new business models in banking, cash management, and cross-border clearing, rather than a barrier.

This panel will explore:

  • Where banks can efficiently deploy digital assets in payments, liquidity, and international money movement
  • How regulatory clarity is unlocking new revenue and operational models
  • And when institutions should move from pilots to production, making informed bets — not on speculative assets, but on the regulated, scalable digital rails that will shape the next era of global payments

As shifting geopolitics redraw the map of global commerce, the race is on for true digital standardisation and interoperability—can we leave paper behind for good? With non-bank platforms rising, banks must find new ways to stand out. Artificial intelligence, digital assets, and tokenisation promise to rewrite the rulebook, while technology takes centre stage in the fight against fraud. All this unfolds against a backdrop of evolving regulations and capital demands, setting the stage for a bold new era in trade and finance.
